The Grief I Didn't Know I Was Carrying — Ancestral Healing and the Freeze Nobody Names

I thought I had done my grief work. I had processed the losses I was aware of — had named them, had cried them, had extracted the lessons and moved forward in the way that felt, from the inside, like genuine completion. I was not walking around consciously sad. I was not, by any measure I could identify, still in it.
And then in a somatic healing session — body-led, slow, beginning with simple breath and sensation tracking — something arrived in my chest that had no story attached to it. No narrative, no face, no name. Just an enormous, ancient sorrow that the body had apparently been holding for years, waiting for a container large enough to finally receive it.
That was the grief I did not know I was carrying. And it was not mine alone.
What My Chart Was Holding
My Moon is in Pisces in my 9th house, conjunct Lilith. Lilith in astrology represents what has been exiled, suppressed, driven underground — the wild and true feminine that the world did not know how to hold. Conjunct my Pisces Moon, in the house of lineage and the wider philosophical and spiritual journey, this placement carries the emotional inheritance of women before me who were not permitted to feel what they felt. Who buried what was too large, too fierce, too sorrowful for the environments they inhabited.
The Pisces Moon itself is extraordinarily porous. It does not maintain clean boundaries between self and other, between this lifetime and what has been carried forward. It absorbs. It holds. It carries. And when it is conjunct Lilith, what it holds includes the exiled grief of an entire lineage.
I did not choose to carry this. But I did carry it. And somatic healing was the only path I found that could actually move it.
Ancestral Grief and the Body
Epigenetics — the science of how lived experience modifies gene expression and passes those modifications across generations — has begun to validate what somatic healers and ancestral healing practitioners have understood for a long time: grief, trauma, and unprocessed loss do not always end with the person who first experienced them.
The nervous system you were born into was already shaped by what came before you. The emotional landscape of your family lineage. The unprocessed losses your grandmothers carried in silence because there was no language, no space, no permission to grieve them. All of it arriving in your body as baseline — as the water you swam in before you had any awareness that there was water at all.
In somatic healing, ancestral grief lives in the body as a low, pervasive heaviness with no obvious source. As a sadness that lifts and returns without explanation. As a specific quality of freeze — not the sharp freeze of acute trauma, but the slow, dense stillness of grief held so long it has become part of the tissue.
What Moving It Felt Like
The somatic healing work that addressed this material was not dramatic. It was slow. It involved simply being present with sensation — with the weight in the chest, with the specific quality of grief that has no story, with the body's natural inclination to move through things when given enough safety and time.
The freeze began to thaw in layers. Not all at once — the body rarely offers things all at once. In the way winter always ends: gradually, and then suddenly, with the kind of relief that makes you understand viscerally what the word renewal actually means.
I wept for women I had never met. I felt the completion of cycles that started long before me. And afterward, something in my body was lighter in a way that no amount of cognitive processing had ever reached.
This is what ancestral healing through somatic work actually is. Not a concept. A completion.
If Something in This Is Calling to You
If your body is carrying something right now that words have not been able to reach — if you are in a season where the knowing is bigger than the processing — Light Chrysalis may be a beautiful place to begin. This is 1:1 deep transformation work that meets you exactly where you are, without demand or agenda. My invitation is to explore it at carriesymes.com whenever the timing feels right for you.
