Somatic Healing 101: What It Is, Why It Works, and How to Begin

Woman seen from behind rubbing her neck against a plain brown background, wearing a beige ribbed top.

You have done the work. You have read the books, processed in therapy, journaled until your hand ached, understood your wounds from every intellectual angle. And still — in certain moments, at certain tones of voice, in certain bodies of water — something in you responds as if it is still happening.

That is not a failure of your healing. That is information about where the healing has not yet reached.

The body holds what the mind cannot process alone. And somatic healing is the path that finally goes there.

What Is Somatic Healing?

Somatic healing is a body-based approach to trauma, emotional processing, and nervous system regulation. The word 'somatic' comes from the Greek 'soma,' meaning body. At its core, somatic healing operates from a foundational truth that neuroscience has now confirmed: trauma is not stored primarily in memory or thought. It is stored in the body — in the nervous system, the fascia, the breath patterns, the chronic muscular holding that the body adopts to manage what was once overwhelming.

Unlike talk therapy, which primarily engages the cognitive mind, somatic healing works with the body's own intelligence. It tracks sensation. It works with breath. It invites the body to complete the survival responses that were interrupted during traumatic experiences. It creates new neural pathways — not through understanding, but through felt experience.

Why Talk Therapy Sometimes Is Not Enough

Talk therapy is powerful and has an important place in healing. But for many people — especially those with early childhood trauma, complex PTSD, or ancestral patterns held in the body — cognitive processing alone has a ceiling.

The nervous system's threat responses — fight, flight, freeze, fawn — are managed by the brainstem and limbic system, which are not directly accessible through language. Somatic healing works beneath language. It goes where the words have never reached.

What Somatic Healing Looks Like in Practice

Somatic healing is not one single modality — it is a family of approaches that share the commitment to body-led healing. In my practice, somatic healing work may include breathwork, where conscious connected breathing accesses and releases stored emotional and physical material. It may include body scanning and somatic tracking — learning to notice sensation as information rather than something to manage or suppress.

It may include somatic coaching, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), which works with the body's meridian system, or Angelic Reiki, which addresses the energetic layer of the body's held experience. And it often includes work with the nervous system directly: learning to recognize the states of activation and shutdown, and developing the capacity to gently move between them with increasing fluency.

Astrology and somatic healing are not separate tools in my practice — they are woven together. The natal chart reveals the terrain the nervous system has been navigating. The somatic work provides the tools to actually move through it.

If You Are Ready to Take Your Healing Beyond What the Mind Can Reach Alone

If something in this post has been quietly calling to you — if you recognize yourself in this cycle and feel ready to move through it in a way that actually reaches the body — my invitation is to book a Light Chrysalis Clarity Call. It is a no-pressure conversation where we explore where you are, what you are ready for, and whether Light Chrysalis is the right container for this season of your healing. You can find it at carriesymes.com.
